Lyngby Loppemarked
by Katrina Palad

Have you noticed, how your fellow Filipinos go “Oh, wala ka sa Lyngby noong isang lingo, ah!” “Oo, pare absent pangumaga kasi ako…” “Pero ngayong lingo, kita kita tayo!” – Well, what is that all about??
Summer in
Every summer, almost every weekend, there’s the phenomenon called “kræmmermarked”. Most of us from Copenhagen are familiar with “Ullerup”, “Kaninmarkedet”, Bellahøj etc., all consisting of large open spaces, with a fair for the young ones, the biggest hot dogs for the hungry and lots of cheap buys that can be bought even cheaper, with the right smile and the right tone of voice. Old and new, you can find almost anything and everything!
The “loppemarked” – flea market is the smaller size and the cozier version of this same phenomenon, though traditionally everything is old, nothing new is to be sold.
Our fellow Filipinos have made one flea market particularly popular within the community – Lyngby Loppetorv. Yearly, starting from mid-May until end of Sept., almost every Sunday, from 8-14 o’clock. You will find the bunch of people on both rainy and sunny Sundays by the parking lot of Lyngby Storcenter. From the start you can enjoy a hot cup of coffee and a home made Danish bun with butter; later on they serve cake, juice, water and more coffee.
Lyngby Loppetorv is organized by Virum Håndboldklub, and for further information and details you can click into their website http://www.lyngbyloppetorv.dk.
“Lyngby loppetorv is considered by many, as one of the best flea markets in Denmark, because the spirit of the traditional flea market is still being kept by critically considering what is being sold on the market. It is not a “kræmmermarked”, meaning they try to maintain the tradition of not selling new goods. The market is exiting for all, from families with children to the bold flea market-wanderer and the collector.” (Translated from www.Markedskalenderen.dk -
